Platelet Rich Plasma and Platelet Rich Fibrin

It is undeniably important to take time every day to pay attention to our body and our oral health to ensure that our overall health is in good shape. Perhaps even more vital than taking that time, however, is understanding how your body’s natural healing process works. When you must undergo medical procedures, including dental surgery, it is a good idea to understand how your body’s natural healing abilities can help you heal quickly and properly. At Pickens Family Dentistry, we are proud to offer things like platelet rich plasma and platelet rich fibrin to our patients. This is a particularly exciting tool that can help kick start your body’s healing process to ensure that you recover thoroughly.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Much as the name indicates, platelet rich plasma (PRP) is simply plasma that contains a high amount of platelets. Note that these are a by-product of your own. It is blood that your body uses in certain processes to help your body overcome injury and heal while lowering the chance of infection. It is also worth noting that platelet rich plasma (and its resulting platelet rich fibrin, where plasma is combined with leucocytes to create a fibrous material) is a rather recent addition to modern dentistry, however, this is not the case when it comes to other areas of medicine. PRP has a great many benefits that are well documented, in other words, but the procedure that is used to separate platelets from the blood was not reasonably affordable for everyday consumers until recently.

PRP Characteristics

You might be curious about why everyone is so excited and interested when it comes to PRP. Simply put, PRP helps take advantage of your body’s natural healing function. This might seem like something rather extraneous and unnecessary until you understand that PRP increases your body’s healing ability by focusing its attention upon a specific area or wound. This, in turn, means that your body will send more healing processes and cells to that specific location, thus greatly improving the process’s effectiveness while simultaneously lowering the time it takes for patients to recover fully.

PRP is available for many procedures at Pickens Family Dentistry. We are pleased to be able to use PRP in procedures like bone grafting, where the presence of PRP can increase the final amount of bone that is generated. Additionally, keep in mind that the process is not a dangerous one. We are using your blood and your platelets, after all, so there is nothing for your body to dislike. The process itself only requires a small bit of blood and about 15 to 20 minutes, and the PRP is ready to be used to help enhance your natural healing ability.
