If your goal is to try and keep your oral health at its peak, then you need to practice regular oral hygiene. While brushing and flossing need to be a regular part of that, there is more to your oral hygiene routine than just those two things. Coming in to see us here at Pickens Family Dentistry is also part of keeping up with your oral health. To find out everything you need to do to keep your whole mouth healthy, give us a call to come in for a consultation.
Brushing and FlossingYou need to make sure that you brush your teeth at least two times each day. This should be once in the morning when you first get up, and another time in the evening before you retire to bed. You need to make sure that you brush for at least two minutes each time, and that you get all surfaces of each tooth. Make sure that you change up how you brush each time so that it doesn’t get so routine that you miss anywhere.
One of the two times you brush, you also need to floss. You need to make sure you use a new section of floss between each set of teeth to keep the bacteria from spreading any more than it already does. You also need to make sure that at least once per week you sterilize your toothbrush. This can be done by running your brush through the dishwasher on the top rack, or even by soaking your toothbrush in a small bit of mouthwash between each time you rinse.
MouthwashOnce you are done brushing and flossing, you also need to rinse with mouthwash. We recommend all of our patients rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash that is fortified with fluoride. Alcohol can dry out your mouth, so it should be avoided whenever possible. Make sure that you swish back and forth for at least 30-60 seconds, then spit the mouthwash into the sink. Never swallow your mouthwash, as it is not good for you.
Dental VisitsOne thing that some people overlook that is a part of the oral hygiene routine is coming in for regular dental exams. You need to do this every six months so that we can keep an eye on anything that is going on within your mouth. The more often we see your mouth, the earlier we are typically able to catch any problems.
