History of Dental Implants

When it comes to important daily routines that have a huge impact on your life, it is hard to beat your oral care routine. In fact, this should be something that you care deeply about – something that you dedicate a lot of time too because you understand just how much your teeth do for you. That doesn’t just mean brushing and flossing, however, as it is equally important to visit us as often as necessary to ensure that your oral health remains in great shape. Should encounter something odd or notice something strange in your mouth, you should contact us immediately so that we can help you fix the issue. At Pickens Family Dentistry, we understand that dental procedures can be scary – but we also understand that they are necessary when it comes to maintaining healthy teeth. Besides, some dental procedures have been around for thousands of years! At least we have the benefit of sterilized tools and anesthesia in modern dentistry.

With that thought in mind, let’s take a look at the history of dental implants.

Dental Implants

As the name implies, a dental implant is an implant that is placed in an empty socket that is left after a tooth is extracted. That implant will eventually fuse to become part of your jawbone, working just like your natural teeth and helping you to maintain a natural smile at the same time. Because this kind of technology feels so advanced, it might strange to think about it as being one that has been around for centuries. Regardless, dental implants have a long and storied history that began as long ago as 4,000 years in the past.

The First Dental Implant

The first dental implant, according to some historians, originated in China. Around 4000 years ago, people used to carefully carve bamboo pegs to use as a replacement of sorts for missing teeth. In fact, these implants were even placed much like today’s implants, although the process tended to be less efficient and advanced. Additionally, these bamboo pegs did not fuse to the jawbone and function like natural teeth, but they were considered a viable replacement nonetheless.

Dental Implants Over the Years

We have come a long way since bamboo pegs. It should be noted that it was only in recent history that dental implants became a widespread success and saw increased development. Attempts in the 18th and 19th centuries were made to use dental implants successfully, however, the process was far too unrefined and dentists at the time didn’t understand how to guarantee that a patient’s body would accept the materials used in the implant. They didn’t understand how to ensure the body wouldn’t reject the implant, in other words. Because of this, it wasn’t until recently, around 1952, that a dentist (an orthopedic surgeon, to be exact) accidentally discovered the right combination of materials and properties that currently fuel today’s modern dental implants: certain materials, like titanium, fuse to the body.
