Dentures in Vancouver, WA.Chances are good that at some point in your life, you might need to invest in tooth replacement procedures of one type or another. This is largely a natural part of the aging process, and while we can always take great care of our teeth and hope that they see us through our lives, the truth is that sometimes they won’t. When that happens, you will need to look into alternative options to help maintain the structural integrity of your jaw and of your mouth. This is especially true when we’re talking about large numbers of teeth that have been lost. Dentures are one solution to this issue.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a dental tool often used when a patient loses their teeth. There are a few different kinds of dentures. Full dentures, for example, are used when the patient in question has lost all of their natural teeth. Partial dentures are used when the patient still has some natural teeth that can help anchor the dentures in place. In general, the difference in appearance and in function is negligible—full dentures and partial dentures look the same and function in primarily the same way.

Partial Dentures

Complete Dentures

Removable, full dentures tend to be created from plastic. Sometimes they might sit on a metal base. Acrylic is a popular choice for many dentures. They are generally made to match the color of your existing gums and are simply placed over them. Gravity tends to hold the bottom dentures in place while the upper dentures are held in place via suction. As you might imagine, dentures can feel very awkward at first and it might take a few trips to the dentist to get the right fit in order to comfortably wear them, however, once you get used to them you will be able to speak and eat more normally and naturally than you did before investing in them.

Why Do I Need Dentures?

When people think about getting dentures, they mostly do so for aesthetic reasons. Missing your teeth can be a big blow to your confidence, after all, and it can also be hard to find yourself losing the ability to speak and eat as you always have. This is a big reason why so many people decide to get dentures after losing many of their teeth. There is another reason, however, that is somewhat less understood by many patients.

Your teeth and your jaw help maintain the structure of your face. Without them, you might find that your facial muscles are sagging, for example, which probably won’t make anyone happy. Dentures help ensure that your face looks the same that it always has. Remember that your dentures will be made to closely fit your gums, and you can even have them made to look like your natural teeth. This can help with both your confidence and the structural integrity of your face.
