Insomnia's Effects on Your Teeth

Your mouth needs to rest, just like the rest of your body. During the night, your mouth covers your teeth with saliva, which then helps to work on dental repairs. Your body is trying to replace calcium, infuse nutrients, and repair anything that was damaged during the previous day.

If you struggle to get good sleep at night from something like insomnia, then it is important that you take the time to talk to your dentist. Your teeth are at higher risk of suffering from ill-effects.

Problems Your Teeth May Face if You Are an Insomniac

Increased tooth decay is one of the top contenders for problems your teeth may struggle with. This is because there is less time for your mouth to repair small issues fully, meaning there is always some left behind to continue to cause trouble. Your mouth is then constantly trying to play catch up instead of being able to stay ahead of problems.

Increased tooth sensitivity is also a likely problem you will face if you have insomnia. This is because as your enamel wears down from use and acids in your mouth, your teeth become more sensitive. The less repairs your body is able to make during the night, the more erosion is likely to happen.

You may also struggle with the effects of bruxism, which is clenching and grinding your teeth. This happens when people try to focus, especially when tired or stressed out. If you aren't getting enough sleep, you could begin doing it without even realizing it.

You need to make sure your dentist knows if you aren't sleeping well. Explain to them how much sleep you do get on average, and let them decide if you need to come in a bit more often. They may want to see you more regularly to keep a close eye on your dental health.
