Understanding Dental Debridement Before You Get It Done

Pickens Family Dentistry can answer your questions about dental debridement.
Dental debridement sure sounds like a scary dental procedure. Right now, you are probably thinking you hope you never need that it sounds pretty painful. Well, it isn't painful and it isn't as bad as it sounds. Explaining dental debridement can go a long way to easing your anxiety in case you do require the procedure. Dental debridement in a simple explanation is manually removing large amounts of plaque and tartar from your teeth. This typically is required when you haven’;t been to a dentist for a long time for the type of cleaning only a dentist can do.

What Is the Procedure for a Dental Debridement?

The good news is that even if you have sensitive teeth or have a lot of anxiety when visiting the dentist, you can be mildly sedated if you feel it is necessary. The sedation will allow you to be awake, but you won’;t feel a thing. You will also be totally relaxed so there won’;t be any anxiety either. If you don’;t feel the need for sedation a numbing gel can be applied to the gums or you can have a local anesthetic applied with a needle.

Your dentist has several methods to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth. This can involve hand tools that gently scrape the tartar and plaque away or your dentist can use a tool that uses water and high-frequency vibration. The combination of water and high-frequency vibration gently loosens and dislodges the plaque and tartar from your teeth. Once this is complete, your dentist will be able to see your teeth so that he can get a better grip on what kind of shape they are in. Large deposits of plaque and tartar can hide problems with your teeth. Debridement makes them visible and cleans your teeth.
